Boat Insurance — Compare Marine Insurance Cover
Boat insurance protects the boat, your passengers and your liability when something goes wrong on the water — and for many owners it is not optional: lenders and marinas routinely require it. This page gathers the marine insurance providers listed on Boat Deals Direct, explains what boat insurance covers and what it leaves out, and shows what drives boat insurance cost, so you can compare marine insurance quotes like-for-like and insure a boat with your eyes open before you ever need to claim.
What boat insurance covers — and what it leaves out
A marine insurance policy has two halves. Hull cover pays for physical damage to the boat itself — collision, grounding, storm damage, theft and fire — while liability cover pays when you are responsible for damage to another boat or an injury to someone else. The most important line in the policy is how the hull is valued: an agreed-value policy pays the value written in the policy, while an actual-cash-value policy pays market value at the time of loss, which on an older boat can be far less than you expect. Knowing which form a quote uses is the difference between comparing real cover and comparing two numbers that only look alike.
Who requires boat insurance? If the boat is financed, your lender will require it as a condition of the loan — one reason boat financing and insurance are usually arranged together. Marinas commonly require proof of liability cover before assigning a slip, and some states set minimum requirements of their own. Premiums are driven by knowable things: the boat's value, age and type, the waters you navigate, where the boat is stored, your experience and claims history, and the limits and deductibles you choose. Price those factors honestly and boat cover stops being a surprise line item and becomes a planned cost of owning the boat.
Hull & liability cover
Hull cover protects the boat itself; liability cover protects you when your boat damages property or injures someone else.
Agreed value vs market value
Agreed-value policies pay the insured value; actual-cash-value policies pay depreciated market value. The gap matters most on older boats.
Cover lenders & marinas require
Financed boats must be insured, and marinas usually want liability proof before a slip is assigned — arrange cover before closing day.
