A Lake Murray boating guide has to start with scale: 48,579 acres of Saluda River water across four counties, 30 minutes from downtown Columbia. Murray is a working hydroelectric reservoir that behaves like a small inland sea — 41 miles long, up to 14 wide, broad basin below, quiet river arms above. Our roundup of the best lakes for boating covers the region's standouts; this guide covers Murray itself — ramps, marinas, rulebooks, striper seasons, drawdowns.

Lake Murray Boating Guide: Big Water Half an Hour From the State House

Lake Murray fills the Saluda River valley where its two river arms join. Built in 1927–1930 for the Lexington Water Power Company, it is named for chief engineer William S. Murray. Its Dreher Shoals Dam, roughly a mile and a half long, ranked among the world's largest earthen dams at completion; first power reached Columbia in December 1930, and a backup dam followed in 2005. Four counties touch the water — Lexington, Richland, Newberry, Saluda — with Lexington and Irmo on the south shore, Chapin on the north, Prosperity and Batesburg-Leesville up-lake.

Launching on Murray: Dam Parks, Public Landings and Marinas

The most-used public launch sits at the dam. Dominion's Irmo-side park is open around the clock, parking $5 a day or $50 a season, paid online since cash ended April 1, 2026, boaters-only between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The Lexington side is the swim park: a lifeguard-free beach, April to Labor Day, on a $5 reserved day pass; no swimming at the Irmo launch.

Mid-lake, Dreher Island State Park covers three bridged islands, 348 acres: three ramps, 97 campsites, five rental villas. Dominion's map adds landings all around: Larry Koon, Bundrick Island, Hilton Recreation Area, Murray Shores.

Fuel, slips and service come from full-service marinas named here in plain text: Lake Murray Marina (Irmo), Lighthouse Marina (Chapin), Southshore Marina (Leesville), Jake's Landing (by the dam) and Big Man's Marina (Highway 391) — wet slips, covered storage, dry stack. Slips run waiting lists in season, so storage shapes the boat you buy.

Where to Boat: The Lower Basin, the River Arms and Doolittle Island

The lower lake, dam to mid-lake islands, is the big water: open fetch, long ski runs, whole coves of rafted-up boats in summer. The five brick intake towers off the dam are the landmark — view them from outside the marked 200-foot exclusion zone described below.

The mid-lake holds the strangest address. The island charted as Lunch Island is known locally as Bomb Island, or Doolittle Island: B-25 crews from Columbia Army Air Base — the nation's largest B-25 training base — flew practice bombing runs over this water in the 1940s, and a Mitchell that ditched on April 4, 1943, slept in about 150 feet of water until raised in 2005 for Birmingham's Southern Museum of Flight. Now an SCDNR sanctuary (no landing), it hosts a late-June-to-early-August purple martin roost counted in the hundreds of thousands — billed as North America's largest. Watch from an anchored boat at dusk.

Above the bridges, the river arms are quieter and shallower — dawn bass boats, crappie on standing timber, paddlers. Drawdowns take these depths first.

Lake Murray Boating Guide: SCDNR Rules, Dominion Permits and the Buffer Zone

Two authorities govern a Murray boat day. The state's half runs through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources: every motorized watercraft must be titled and registered — and, the newcomer's surprise, an outboard of 5 horsepower or more is titled separately from the hull. Registrations renew annually; operators born after July 1, 2007 need an SCDNR-approved safety credential at 10+ horsepower.

The idle-speed statute names Lake Murray outright: idle speed within 100 feet of a wharf, dock, bulkhead or pier, and within 50 feet of a moored or anchored vessel or a person in the water. Wake surfing keeps 200 feet from the same list. Children under 12 wear a life jacket on boats under 16 feet; personal-watercraft riders all wear one, ashore sunset to sunrise.

Dominion's half: docks, lifts, seawalls and other structures on project lands need a Dominion permit first — its guidelines and fee schedule govern — and the federal licence keeps a 75-foot vegetated buffer along shoreline developed since 1984: buffer natural, dock path allowed, clearing not. The project boundary follows the 360-foot contour — a permit and a deed are different paper. Boaters: stay 200 feet from the five intake towers, an SCDNR-enforced exclusion zone.

Striper Fishing on Murray: A Stocked Fishery With a Two-Season Rulebook

Murray's signature fish is the striped bass, and the fishery is artificial in the best sense: stripers cannot reproduce here, so SCDNR stocks fingerlings — a managed crop feeding on blueback herring. The rulebook — South Carolina Code §50-13-230 — runs on two seasons. The limit is five striped or hybrid bass a day, all year. From October 1 through May 31 each fish kept must measure at least 21 inches. From June 1 through September 30 there is no minimum length: summer heat makes released stripers unlikely to survive, so the five-fish cap does the conserving instead.

Largemouth bass are the second headline — dock rows, brush, upper-cove grass — and Dreher Island's tournament shelters exist because national trails launch there. Crappie hold on timber, bluegill and shellcracker bed in spring, channel/blue/flathead catfish work the bottom. A South Carolina fishing license covers anglers 16 and older.

Murray's Water Levels: The 360 Line, Summer 358 and the Drawdown Winters

Dominion holds normal maximum pool at about 360 feet on its plant datum and runs the lake near 358 through the summer. The number that organises the calendar is 350: every few years the lake drops about ten feet across fall and winter, stranding vegetation that fouls coves and propellers in dry, freezing air. Drawdowns are set with SCDNR and state environmental officials; the low months double as the dock-repair window — permit first.

The current cycle is one of those winters. Dominion announced on September 9, 2026 that the lake would be lowered through the fall to approximately 350 feet in December 2026, held through January 2027, refilled toward 358 feet by late spring 2027 — the first trip to 350 since January 2023. For boaters: care in shallow coves, marginal upper-arm ramps until the refill, and a level check on Dominion's page first.

Best Boats for Lake Murray

The pontoon — better, the tritoon — is Murray's default boat: room for the whole cove party, a shallow footprint for the islands, enough hull for the lower basin's afternoon chop. Anglers split two ways: bass boats for the creek arms and Dreher Island tournament launches, and center consoles or bay boats for trolling and live-baiting stripers over open water, doubling as family runabouts. Deck boats split the difference for families who swim, tube and cruise to dinner. The lower basin's fetch also makes Murray a genuine sailing lake, and personal watercraft work the coves within the sunset curfew and idle-speed zones. Storage decides use: a dry-stack boat launches far more often than one trailered from Columbia. Start in the boats listed under $50,000 — the deepest used pontoon and center-console water — and widen to the full listings.

Buying a Boat for Murray: Two Titles, One Tax Receipt and a Dock Permit

A South Carolina purchase closes on paperwork most states never ask for. SCDNR titles hull and — at 5 horsepower and up — outboard separately, so a used boat may arrive with two titles or, too often, one title and a story. The seller must produce a South Carolina title in the seller's own name; a missing motor title means pricing the hassle or walking away. At titling, the state charges casual excise tax — 5 percent, capped at $500 — and the packet includes a paid county property-tax receipt. File promptly.

Waterfront buyers get a second closing table: the dock stands on Dominion's permission, not the seller's. Confirm its permit status with Dominion's Lake Management office before closing, and walk the buffer so your imagined clearing or rebuild is licence-legal. On Lake Hartwell, Murray's South Carolina sibling, a Corps of Engineers permit does the same job under a different book. Hunting? Browse the boats for sale — and when yours rotates out, list it for the next owner with both titles in hand.

Lake Murray Boating Guide FAQs

How big is Lake Murray?

48,579 acres, 620 miles of shoreline, roughly 41 by 14 miles, and 200 feet deep near the dam — SCDNR's figures; tourism rounds up to 50,000 acres and 650 miles.

Why is Lake Murray low in the winter of 2026–27?

A Dominion vegetation-control drawdown: lowered to about 350 feet in December 2026, held through January 2027, exposing nuisance plants in shallow coves to dry, freezing air. Back near 358 feet by late spring 2027; the last trip to 350 was January 2023.

Can you get out on Bomb Island?

No — it is an SCDNR sanctuary (charted as Lunch Island, called Doolittle Island for the B-25 crews who trained over it) and landing is prohibited. Anchor nearby on a summer evening, late June to early August, and watch them pour in at dusk.

Does my outboard really need its own title in South Carolina?

Yes — outboards of 5 horsepower or more are titled separately through SCDNR and registered on their own. Buying used, check both titles transfer into your name, with a paid county property-tax receipt.

Murray runs on two clocks: Dominion's gauge — 358 summers, 350 winters — and the martins' late-June dusk. Learn both, and this Lake Murray boating guide reduces to one errand: find your boat among the listings at BoatDealsDirect.com, title hull and motor, and be on the water in time for the birds.
